Petrobras and its partners have been working closely together for almost one decade to develop and implement electric completion systems in pre-salt wells. This long-term effort has recently reached a major milestone with the successful deployment of the first all-electric intelligent completion in an ultra-deepwater well, in the Búzios field, offshore Brazil. This achievement was enabled by a collaborative R&D ecosystem with other operators, technology suppliers and institutions. Long-term engagement, commitment to field deployment, risk and cost sharing and years of rigorous technical development were key elements in progressively increasing technology maturity and readiness. Another key aspect of the technology development was its focus on reliability, since the initial concepts, a cultural change in comparison to regular approaches. Some strategies were applied to mitigate the inherent risks of using new technologies in critical subsea applications, as well as to build the necessary confidence required from the assets. Petrobras followed a gradual implementation plan, where each part of the solutions was individually tested and validated in the field, before the full architecture was deployed. Production increase, improved reservoir management and efficiency, reduced OPEX and emissions are just some of the expected results of this innovative approach to complex and long-term technologies, showing how the industry can join forces to evolve together.
