Offshore Decommissioning: Technologies, Digitalization, and Sustainable Asset Retirement

04 May 2027
Room 310
Technical Session
Offshore decommissioning is evolving from a conventional end-of-life activity into a highly engineered, technology-driven phase of the offshore asset lifecycle. Increasingly complex subsea infrastructure, aging wells and facilities, regulatory requirements, environmental considerations, and cost pressures are driving the need for safer, more efficient, and more sustainable approaches to abandonment and removal. This technical session presents recent advances in offshore decommissioning, well abandonment, subsea intervention, digital planning, and asset repurposing. The selected papers highlight innovative technologies for permanent plug and abandonment, sustained-annulus-pressure remediation, diverless conductor removal, subsea retrieval operations, riser pull-out, and decontamination of radioactive production equipment. The session also examines the broader evolution of decommissioning through digital twins, lifecycle planning, cost and financial reconciliation, and alternative strategies for repurposing aging offshore infrastructure. Together, these contributions demonstrate how technology and improved lifecycle planning can reduce offshore exposure, improve safety, control costs, and create new opportunities for sustainable management of aging offshore assets.
