The CO2-SCC Journey: Ten Years of Lessons, Breakthroughs and Solutions for Flexible Pipes

05 May 2027
Room 600
Technical Session
A decade ago, the emergence of CO2-induced stress corrosion cracking (CO2-SCC) in flexible pipe armor wires posed a major threat to the development of some of the world's most prolific offshore fields. What began as an unprecedented integrity challenge has evolved into one of the industry's most extensive technology and innovation journeys. This session brings together the lessons, breakthroughs, and solutions developed throughout ten years of investigation, field experience, and technology deployment in Brazil's pre-salt province. Attendees will learn how the industry advanced from identifying and understanding the SCC mechanism to implementing field inspection technologies, integrity assessment methodologies, asset recovery strategies, mitigation technologies, life-extension approaches, and ultimately new flexible pipe architectures tailored for high-CO2 environments. More than a retrospective, this session highlights how collaborative innovation across operators, suppliers, and research organizations reshaped the future of flexible pipe integrity, providing practical solutions and valuable insights for offshore developments worldwide.
